- Summary
- This episode of the program New York voices focuses on dancers in New York City. The first segment is about Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and its new building; Judith Jamison speaks about making the transition from dancing to choreographing and directing the company, and about Ailey's legacy of expressing African American experience and culture. Also included are interviews with company dancers Guillermo Asca and Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell. The second segment focuses on the National Dance Institute, founded by Jacques d'Amboise to bring dance to public school students. D'Amboise, Ellen Weinstein, Kay Gaynor, and student participants speak about the program, which also involves physically disabled students in dance. The final segment follows a day in the life of Jonah Bokaer, a dancer with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. Bokaer speaks about his dance background and how he entered the company; he is seen rehearsing and performing a solo in the piece Split sides, and Cunningham's assistant Robert Swinston speaks about his qualities as a dancer. The segment also covers Bokaer's involvement with the performance collective Magnetic Laboratorium, directed by Marisela LaGrave, and a solo he choreographed and performed inspired by Marcel Duchamp's Nude descending a staircase. The end of the program marks the death of Bobby Short with a clip of Short performing I'll take Manhattan at the Café Carlyle.
