- Summary
- The program begins with a Chris Barreto performance art installation, Serhumanarte, and then focuses on traditional native Brazilian and Afro-Brazilian dance and music as interpreted and performed by the company Roots of Brazil. Company founder Lygya Barreto provides commentary during the piece Native Brazilian suite, which is performed to recorded traditional music of the Amazon nations Xavante and Tukuna, and which includes a mix of traditional and contemporary forms of movement. Barbara Browning introduces performances of the Cabloco feather dance and Candomblé ritual, explaining their signficance in Afro-Brazilian religious practices. Daniel Dawson talks about the African roots and different forms of capoeira and samba as an introduction to the program's final performances.
