Summary
The Balanchine Foundation's Barbara Horgan introduces this program, which features two Balanchine works, Le Baiser de la Fée (1937, music by Igor Stravinsky) and Mozartiana (1933, music by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky). Both are no longer performed and in danger of disappearing. Balanchine dancer Maria Tallchief introduces Le Baiser de la Fée and coaches two dancers, Nikolaj Hübbe and Jenifer Ringer, through a rehearsal from a section of the dance. This is followed by a discussion between Maria Tallchief and host Nancy Reynolds. Tallchief talks about her career as a dancer, including her leading roles with Balanchine. Includes footage of Tallchief dancing the role of the Gypsy in Le Baiser de la Fée, a role she danced with Frederic Franklin, who later joins the panel. Franklin talks about his own experience as a Balanchine dancer as well as his working relationship with Aleksandra Danilova. He coaches Hübbe and Ringer through a rehearsal from two sections of Mozartiana. Includes footage of Franklin and Danilova and then Franklin and Julie Kent dancing the pas de deux from Mozartiana.
