Summary
Frederic Franklin, Virginia C. Gildersleeve Professor at Barnard College, answers questions from three panelists about his career in dance. Franklin discusses the state of dance in England when he began his career; his first jobs performing in Paris with Josephine Baker and Mistanguett; his facility for learning choreography; how he joined the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo; his long partnership with Alexandra Danilova; the experience of touring with the Ballet Russe; Balanchine's association with the company. The program is introduced by Sandra Genter and begins with a film clip from a rehearsal of Devil's holiday, choreographed by Frederick Ashton. The program concludes with a film clip of Franklin and Danilova performing the waltz from Gaîté parisienne, choreographed by Léonide Massine.
