Summary
Using archival footage, film fragments, interviews, and dramatic re-enactments, director Helena Solberg explores the life story and cultural significance of Carmen Miranda, with a focus on the director's personal relationship to Miranda's legend. The film examines Carmen's origins in Portugal and upbringing in Brazil, the development of her signature style and "Bahiana" costume, her career and popularity in America. Special focus is on Carmen's importance as a cultural figure in Brazil and controversy surrounding her "Americanization," and how she influenced and was affected by diplomatic relations between the United States and Brazil. Friends and colleagues speak about her frustration with the lack of variety in her movie roles and the way she embodied stereotypes of Latino women, and personal problems stemming from her marriage and career.
