- Edgar, Charles and Emily ("Emilie") Ely were three of the children of Elias S. (1809-1888) and Hester M. (1812-1881) Ely of Madison, Conn. Three sons served as Union soldiers during the American Civil War. Edgar (1837-1896) served in the 14th Connecticut Infantry, Charles (1839-1912) served in the 27th Connecticut Infantry, and Willoughby (1841-1882) served in the 10th Connecticut Infantry.
