- Summary
- Jazz composer, Fred Ho presents excerpts of his newest action-adventure epic. Based on a 17th century martial arts legend, this heroic tale of betrayal and redemption features a fusion of Eastern and Western styles of music, theater and martial arts. Includes a panel discussion with Fred Ho, Mira Kingsley, Jose Figueroa and Ruth Margraff, moderated by Celia Ipiotis. Ho discusses his background in both music and hand-to-hand combat techniques, and sets the scene for the piece, which is based on a 17th-century Chinese legend about the battle for control of the Shaolin Temple's martial arts secrets. Ho explains that the work's title derives from its allegorical representation of Chinese-American youth culture of the 1970s and 1980s. During the panel discussion, Ho and his collaborators discuss the score's musical roots in Chinese and African-American forms, the theatrical shaping of the work, the casting of martial artists in each of the roles, and the distinctions between martial arts and dance choreography.
