- Summary
- A source-based recreation of Serge Prokofiev and Georgi Yakoulov's 1925 machine age ballet. Originally choreographed by Léonide Massine, the choreography and staging is here by Millicent Hodson and Kenneth Archer, with set designs by Lesley-Anne Sayers after Yakoulov. The ballet is performed by students of the Princeton University Program in Theatre and Dance, with the score performed by the Princeton University Orchestra under Michael Pratt. Includes a complete performance of the ballet and a documentary about its reconstruction. Disc 1 includes a feature on Prokofiev's ballet collaborations with Diaghilev and various designers, including Chout, Trapeze and Prodigal son; the commentators discuss the influence of scenic designers on the creation of ballets in the 1920s. This feature also includes a performance of Prokofiev's Musical Interlude, composed originally for quintet and here orchestrated by Samuel Becker. Another feature focuses on the re-sourcing of the choreography. In interviews conducted by Lesley-Anne Sayers, Hodson and Archer discuss their earlier reconstruction projects on the ballets Rite of spring, Skating rink and La chatte. In addition, as documents readable by computer, there is a bibliography, an essay by Professor Sean Sayers on the philosophical background to the ballet, and a biography of Yakoulov.
