Summary
Raw interview footage used for the documentary Broadway, the American musical. Musical theater lyricist and author Tim Rice discusses his involvement in the Broadway musical Beauty and the beast. Rice wrote lyrics for the 1994 theatrical production, which was based on the Disney Company animated film featuring an original score by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman. Rice discusses his collaboration with Elton John on Disney's next Broadway production, the 1997 show The lion king; meeting director Julie Taymor; and the show's opening number Circle of life, for which he wrote the lyrics. Rice speaks about the successful careers of producer Cameron Mackintosh and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber; Lloyd Webber's first show, Jesus Christ superstar, a minor Broadway hit which began as a record album; Lloyd Webber's shows Evita, whose score Rice believes is "brilliant," and his Phantom of the opera, which is his most popular; more about Jesus Christ superstar, and how he and Lloyd Webber produced the LP version; the presence of rock & roll music in the theater; his views on Lloyd Webber's musical Cats; the notion of Lloyd Webber's shows as "sheer spectacle"; whether the musical can be considered an "American" art form; his favorite lyricists Alan Jay Lerner, Cole Porter, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon; creative talent, not corporations, as the source of great musical theater; the difficulty of predicting the source of the next successful musical.
