- Summary
- Charles Jarden moderates a panel discussion about the American Opera Projects new opera Darkling, composed by Stefan Weisman and based on poetry by Anna Rabinowitz. Panelists include Anna Rabinowitz ; composer Stefan Weisman ; composer, Lee Hoiby ; director, Michael Comlish, who also adapted the poem into a theatre piece ; vocal soundscapes, Tom Hamilton ; and video projectionist, David Teague. Rabinowtiz reads selections from her poetry, describes the plot of the opera, gives her take on the themes of the Holocaust, World War II, and separation and alienation, and describes her personal Holocaust story. Composer Stefan Weisman discusses what attracted him to this work, the structural elements in the music, and the acrostic of the poem, in which is contained the text to Darkling thrush, a poem by Thomas Hardy. Composer Lee Hoiby describes how he writes a song. Michael Comlish discusses how he decided to take on such a complex poem. Tom Hamilton describes the process of creating a soundscape. David Teague describes how he feels about his films being used in live theatre as well as techniques used to project the films. Comlish and Rabinowitz discuss the opera music theatre art form and the impact of this work.
