Nederlander, chairman of the Nederlander Organization, discusses how he evaluates a show; the kind of music he likes; his view that raw material and execution are the most important ingredients in creating a successful show; the producer's role in putting a show together; the importance of a good book to a show; the dearth of talented writers for musicals; how to make money in the theater, and the training in the theater business he received in Detroit from his father and the Shubert Brothers; shows he saw at the Detroit Opera House; the media exposure live theater gets today in comparison with its exposure during his early years in the business; theater as a "hit and miss" business; his view of himself as one of the last remaining producers in his league; his purchase of a Broadway venue, the Palace Theatre, in 1964; his attitude toward flops, and his view that in order to be successful in the theatrical business "you can't own just one theater"; more on what's required to produce a successful show; Broadway shows of the 1920s; the riskiness of producing a show on Broadway.

- Broadway, the American musical, which aired on PBS in October 2004, is a documentary chronicling the entire history of a unique American art form, the Broadway musical. Each of its six episodes covers a different era in American theater history, and features the Broadway shows and songs which defined the period. The series draws on feature films, television broadcasts, archival news footage, original cast recordings, still photos, diaries, journals, first-person accounts, and on-camera interviews with many of the principals involved in the development of the genre.
