- Description
- 1 videocassette (VHS) (29 min.) : sd., col. SP; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- Playwright Wendy Wasserstein discusses her career with Newsday critic Linda Winer. Wasserstein, a pioneer in writing for and about post-1960s American women, was the first female playwright to win a Tony Award, for The Heidi Chronicles in 1989. Wasserstein discusses her objective in writing her early play Uncommon women and others; the lack of contemporary models for the strong women characters she portrays, and the inspiration she found in the female characters from 1930s motion pictures; her 1992 play The sisters Rosensweig, which she feels makes a political statement in showing that a loving relationship is possible for a middle aged woman; conveying political ideas via comedy; her studies at Yale Drama School; her 1988 work The Heidi chronicles, whose ending was criticized as regressive from a feminist perspective; being a mother and a playwright; the need for new plays and greater variety in the regional theater; and her wish that there wasn't "a separate slot" for women in the theater.
