Summary
Philip Himberg, Artistic Director of the Sundance Institute Theater Program, moderates a panel discussion about the musical Grey Gardens, which is interspersed with scenes from the musical. Panelists include lyricist, Michael Korie; book author, Doug Wright; director, Michael Greif; and composer, Scott Frankel. Based on the cult film Grey Gardens released in the 1970's, Scott Frankel talks about what inspired him to take this documentary film and turn it into a musical. Doug Wright describes his initial reaction when Frankel approached him about creating a musical out of the documentary film. Michael Korie talks about the development of Act I in the musical. Doug Wright introduces the songs from Act 1. Philip Himberg talks about how the Sundance Theater became involved, offering space to develop the musical and the panel describes the process of developing the musical in the Sundance Institute Theater space in White Oak, Florida. Doug Wright describes his meeting with Albert Maysles, one of the original documentary's filmmakers. Scott Frankel describes the move to a rehearsal space at Playwrights Horizons. Doug Wright introduces the next set of songs. Scott Frankel describes the musical landscape of Grey Gardens. Michael Greif discusses the process of uniting Acts 1 and 2. Each panelist talks about the most thrilling moment in the journey through development of Grey Gardens. Doug Wright introduces the songs from Act II.
