- Summary
- Ella Baff, executive director of Jacob's Pillow, moderates a panel discussion with Paul Lazar and Annie-B Parson, co-directors of Big Dance Theater. Lazar and Parson discuss the creative roots of their work, The other here, which layers three different narratives. These stories-- the relationship between Yosuji, a servant, and Medhi, his master; the chronicle of a man burdened by the gift of a carp; and a tale of an aging life-insurance salesman, are based on two short stories by Japanese author, Masuji Ibuse. The work also incorporates traditional Okinawan dance and pop music, as well as well as the world of the Million Dollar Round Table, a global gathering of competitive life insurance salesmen. Parson and Lazar discuss the theme of East meets West and the different ways each deals with mortality. Parson describes her process in creating the choreography; discusses the costumes and set design; and how video is used in this work. The panel then takes questions from the audience.
