- Summary
- Yuval Sharon, director of New York City Opera's VOX, an annual workshop of new American compositions, moderates a panel discussion about the opera Don Juan in Prague, based on Wolfgang Amadeus' opera Don Giovanni. Sharon talks with the director and adaptor of the opera, David Chambers about the process of bringing Don Juan in Prague to the stage; staging the opera in Prague, where the original Mozart opera premiered; the stage environment; the pretext of the opera; rewriting the recitatives; the comic/tragic aspects of the opera; the decision to focus on Donna Elvira; the role of Don Giovanni; and the use of audio processing in the opera. Composer and arranger, Matthew Suttor, discusses and demonstrates his process of arranging and audio processing Mozart's music and what the processing adds to the telling of the story. The singers, Iva Bittová, Christopher Schaldenbrand, Matt Boehler, Amelia Watkins, and Ashley Wilkinson join the panel and discuss how their experience working on Don Juan in Prague differed from working in traditional opera, as well as each of their particular roles.
