Summary
A documentary about Chiang Ching (Jiang Qing), who performs her dance Variations on a poetess' lament, interspersed with observations by Chiang Ching as well as several other commentators. The commentators, including Anna Kisselgoff, Chief Dance Critic of the New York Times; Kao Yu-Kung, professor of East Asian Studies at Princeton University; Calvin Tsao, architect, New York City; and Gao Xing-Jian, novelist, playwright and painter, discuss the life of Chiang Ching; her combination of Chinese classical dance and western modern dance techniques; the 12th-century poetess Li Ch'Chao, whose work inspired the piece; and the use of architectural typology in the set design.
