- Description
- 1 videodisc (NTSC) (69 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Dr. Scott A. Small, neuroscientist and neurologist at Columbia University, who specializes in memory and memory disorders, and pianist Gilles Vonsattel, a graduate of the combined program at Columbia and Julliard, and winner of the Walter W. Naumburg piano competition in 2002, join forces to illustrate the complexities of how our brains process memories. Dr. Small describes how memories are stored and retrieved in the brain; how these processes decline with age; and the distinctions between declarative or conscious memory and procedural or unconscious memory. The lecture is interspersed with performances by Vonsattel, who performs music by Frédéric Chopin (Etude in C minor op. 10,The Revolutionary etude); Franz Liszt and Béla Bartók, (three movements from Out of doors suite). Vonsattel also describes his own method for memorizing the music he performs.
