Kira Perov moderates a panel discussion of a new production of Tristan und Isolde, which was first presented in concert form in Los Angeles in December 2004, and received its fully staged premere in Paris at the National Opera Bastille in April 2005, directed by Peter Sellars, with video by Bill Viola, under the musical direction of Esa-Pekka Salonen. Gerard Mortier, director of the Paris Opera, speaks about the difficulty of staging Tristan und Isolde, the origins of the opera and its themes. Two excerpts from the Paris production are shown (these excerpts include both the live staging and the video component.) Bill Viola speaks about how he became involved with the project and his reactions to the opera how the video imagery explores the themes of love and death. Two excerpts of the video (without music or staging) are shown, and Viola discusses how they were created.
