Description

Summary
Best known for the pioneering feminist musical I'm getting my act together and taking it on the road (1978), composer/lyricist/performer team Nancy Ford and Gretchen Cryer speak with Newsday critic Linda Winer. They discuss meeting as undergraduates at DePauw University where they wrote their first musical; the development of their first professional shows in New York such as Now is the time for all good men and The last sweet days of Isaac, which addressed themes of war and pacifism; and their short-lived Broadway show Shelter, which depicted a man's media and technology induced self-delusionment. Ford and Cryer expound on the writing of their show I'm getting my act together, which they initially performed as a cabaret act. The show, which concerns a woman's journey to self realization against her boyfriend's wishes, garnered strong reactions from audiences. It was subsequently produced by Joseph Papp at his Public Theater, and went on to tour, becoming extremely popular with audiences. Ford and Cryer also discuss their new Off-Broadway show Anne of Green Gables, and their writing of the American Girl revue. The musical, based on the series of books by Pleasant Rowland about the life of a ten-year-old girl in various periods of American history, is currently playing at American Girl theaters in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.
