- Description
- 1 videodisc (NTSC) (73 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Through a panel discussion and excerpts from The Ta'ziyeh of Hor, this program provides an introduction to Ta'ziyeh, a Shiite dramatic and musical tradition based in religious ritual and primarily practiced in Iran. The panelists explore the history of Ta'ziyeh, citing both its Persian pre-Islamic sources and its basis in the central martyrdom myth of Shīʻah Islam. The stylized gestures and other coded features of the drama are explained, such as the tradition of green clothing for the heroes, who sing their lines, and red for the antagonists, who recite. The panelists also discuss the emotional, participatory response Ta'ziyeh traditionally receives from audiences when performed in Iran.
