Summary
Theater Talk invited Pulitzer-Prize winning cartoonist, Art Spiegelman ("Maus") to interview the venerable theater caricaturist Al Hirschfeld at his studio in New York City. The two artists engage in wide-ranging conversation about the art of capturing a person's essence with line, as well as Hirschfeld's life and career. They begin by discussing early comic strips and the pioneering animated films of Winsor McCay. Hirschfeld discusses his desire to capture the "playwright's intention" via his theater drawings; learning to draw in the dark, and interpreting his theatrical "hieroglyphs" into finished drawings; his experience as a would-be artist in Paris during the 1920s, and early assignments with the New York Times; and his perception of contemporary actors in comparison with stars of an earlier time, such as W. C. Fields, Carol Channing and Zero Mostel.
