Summary
Judy Craymer, producer of the Broadway hit musical Mamma mia!, talks with Theater talk hosts Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins. The show concerns a young girl named Sophie who dreams of a traditional wedding, with her father giving her away at the altar. Craymer expounds on her idea to create a show using songs by the popular rock group ABBA, how it was conceived with book writer Catherine Johnson, and the unconventional trajectory the production took in finding its way to Broadway. The interview with Craymer is followed with a conversation with the show's three stars: Louise Pitre, who plays Sophie's Mom and former front woman of a band called Donna and the Dynamos, and Judy Kaye and Karen Mason who play her former bandmates, Rosie and Tanya. The performers describe why they feel the show appeals to audiences, how the songs by ABBA hold up in the musical theater, and what they see as the show's affirmative message for middle-aged women.
