Summary
Jonathan Sheffer, Artistic Director of the Eos Orchestra leads a panel discussion about how words are adapted to musical settings. Sheffer desribes the atmosphere in France during the period before World War I; a time of great change. Sheffer discusses the portrait of Gertrude Stein by Picasso; Apollinaire's poem La cravate et la montre (The tie and the watch); Cubism; the life of Francis Poulenc and his use of Apollinaire's poetry in his music; Stein's inlfuence on Apollinaire; Sheffer's opera Blood on the dining room floor based on a text by Gertrude Stein. Sheffer reads a few lines from Stein's poem Susie Asado; describes what led him to write an opera based on Stein's book; discusses the literary life of Gertrude Stein; and talks about how he used Stein's words to create his opera.
