- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic) (29 min.) : sd., col. NTSC; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Reporter/critic Alisa Solomon of The Village Voice talks with Inside Broadway co-hosts Susan Haskins and Michael Riedel about the recent removal of artistic director JoAnne Akalaitis from the Public Theater. Akalaitis, who was named by the Public's founder Joseph Papp as his successor, was fired suddenly by the theater's board of directors. Director George C. Wolfe was appointed in her place. Solomon and her hosts discuss the merits of the board's decision, and the various possible reasons for it. They also discuss the issue of whether artistic directors can be expected to function as fund raisers.
- Laurie Winer, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, speaks about the play The Kentucky cycle by Robert Schenkkan. The epic play, which is soon to come to Broadway, runs six and one-half hours and is staged over two nights. It addresses the "savagery and butchery" of Americans during the period of American history from 1775 to 1975. Winer speculates on why the Pulitzer Prize-winning play took so long to arrive on Broadway. Possible reasons include the high costs of producing it, its length, and the seriousness of its subject, which might discourage some theatergoers.
