Summary
Librettist, playwright and screenwriter Peter Stone talks with co-hosts Susan Haskins and Michael Riedel. Stone has authored the librettos to such musicals as 1776, Skyscraper, My one and only, Grand Hotel, and The Will Rogers follies. He discusses his upbringing in Hollywood, Calif., the son of motion picture producer John Stone; and his currently running show The Will Rogers follies, which after two years has yet to pay back its investors. He elaborates on the business climate of the musical theater, which necessitates higher ticket prices, and the production of much longer running shows than in previous decades. Stone speaks about the function of the musical's book; the writing of his favorite book, 1776; his views on producers Cameron Mackintosh and David Merrick; and the dearth of new book writers for the musical theater, a situation caused in part, he feels, by a lack of understanding of what the craft entails.
