Summary
Theatrical producer/general manager Albert Poland speaks about his career with co-hosts Susan Haskins and Michael Riedel. Poland, whose Off-Broadway credits include Futz!, Little shop of horrors, and Steel magnolias, acted as general manager for the Broadway productions of The price by Arthur Miller and the 1990 Tony award-winning production of The grapes of wrath. Poland discusses his soon-to-open Broadway show The song of Jacob Zulu, for which he came under fire when The Dramatists Guild of America rejected his contract as unfair to playwright Tug Yourgrau. Poland examines the challenges of raising money for theatrical productions, especially those considered "risky." He reminisces about founding a Judy Garland fan club at age 13, his drama studies and early career as an actor, and his first forays into producing with David Cryer. The two produced a national road tour of The fantasticks, and then the musical Now is the time for all good men, written by Cryer's wife Gretchen in collaboration with Nancy Ford.
