Biography
In 1999, conceptual artist and photographer Dylan Stone (born 1967) began a project to photograph all of Manhattan, block by block. Born in New York City, but raised and educated in London, Stone conceived of the project as an opportunity to to explore the intersection of art and documentation in an archive. It was intended originally, in part, to show the transience of New York's urban landscape. While Stone's ultimate goal had been to photograph the entire island of Manhattan, he suspended work on the project after completing only the area of lower Manhattan, south of Canal Street. Neighborhoods and streets covered include Battery Park City, the Bowery, Chinatown, the Financial District, Little Italy, the Lower East Side, Soho, and Tribeca. Stone entitled the artwork that was comprised of these photographs, "Drugstore Photographs, or A Trip Along the Yangtze River, 1999." These photographs were featured in Greater New York: New Art in New York Now, an exhibition held at P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in New York City in 2000.
