- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic) (29 min.) : sd., col. NTSC; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Martin Gottfried, author of Sondheim, a biography of composer Stephen Sondheim, talks with co-hosts Susan Haskins and Michael Riedel. Gottfried feels Sondheim is one of the most important composers in the musical theater. He expounds on Sondheim's troubled relationship with his mother; his relationship with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein, who became a mentor and a father figure; and Sondheim's attitude toward composing, which he views as an "act of reason" rather than inspiration. Gottfried then reevaluates various musicals he reviewed as a critic, including Gypsy, A funny thing happened on the way to the forum, and Anyone can whistle. He speaks also about the Sondheim productions Sweeney Todd, Pacific overtures, A little night music, Follies, Sunday in the park with George, Into the woods, and Assassins.
