- Description
- 1 videocassette (U-matic) (29 min.) : sd., col. NTSC; 3/4 in.
- Summary
- Howard Kissel discusses his book David Merrick, the abominable showman : the unauthorized biography, about legendary theatrical producer David Merrick, with co-hosts Susan Haskins and Michael Riedel. Kissel describes Merrick's childhood in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of a poor Jewish family named Margulois; his arrival in New York in 1940 at age 29, and the production of his first successful show, Fanny, in 1949; his gradual "reinvention" of himself as a tyrannical producer who degraded his staff; his sharp instincts as a producer as evidenced in his production Gypsy, which he carefully honed during its out-of-town performances; his production of original dramatic plays like A taste of honey by Shelagh Delaney, a work with which Kissel believes Merrick greatly identified, as well as other plays he imported from London; his declining influence during the 1960s, and forays into motion picture producing; Merrick's stroke in 1983; his marriages and fatherhood; and his publicity stunts designed to undermine drama critics.
