Summary
Author and critic Richard Hornby discusses his book The end of acting: a radical view, with co-hosts Susan Haskins and Michael Riedel. Hornby elaborates on his "beef" with method acting, a technique in which actors draw upon their own real life emotional experiences in order to create a realistic, life-like performance. Derived from Constantin Stanislavski's "system," the method was advanced by Lee Strasberg at his Actors Studio in the 1940s and 50s. Hornby feels the technique is extremely limiting for stage acting, particularly of classic roles, and he also believes that the popularity of the method has resulted in the decline of competent Shakespearean actors in this country. As a result of this training, Hornby asserts, actors today lack the crucial techniques of speech and elocution. Hornby calls for a return to a liberal arts based drama education, in which actors perform in a variety of plays and assume many roles.
