Summary
Joan Peyser talks about her book The memory of all that: the life of George Gershwin, with co-hosts Susan Haskins and Michael Riedel. In her book Peyser makes the case that Alan Gershwin (b. 1926) was the son of George and showgirl Margaret "Mollie" Manners. She also addresses the issue of whether the composer properly acknowledged his musical indebtedness to Black composers. Peyer's work, which draws on recent interviews with Frances Godowsky Gershwin, the youngest of the Gershwin siblings, and with Paul Mueller, Gershwin's valet and chauffeur for the last seven years of his life, explores the composer's problematic relationships with his mother Rose, and with his sister-in-law Lenore. The book also describes how the symptoms of Gershwin's brain tumor, which proved to be inoperable, were overlooked by health professionals and his family.
