- Summary
- Uta Hagen, one of America's most notable stage and film actresses and also a drama teacher, talks with co-hosts Susan Haskins and Michael Riedel. Hagen describes the founding of the acting school HB Studio by her husband Herbert Berghof, her current role as its director, and the HB Playwright's Foundation, which her husband started in 1965 to further the work of new playwrights. Hagen discusses suffering from stage fright when performing the role of Martha in Edward Albee's Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? in its original Broadway run; her writing of the book Respect for acting, a veritable "bible" for actors, which she now disavows because of its misinterpretation; her view that an actor should have a professional goal; and her experience playing Desdemona to Paul Robeson's Othello. The touring production was the first by Actors' Equity to refuse to play in segregated houses. Hagen expresses her respect for Robeson, and analyzes his ability as an actor.
