Summary
Lyricist Sheldon Harnick talks with co-hosts Susan Haskins and Michael Riedel. Harnick expounds on the creation of his 1963 musical She loves me, which is currently being revived on Broadway. Written with composer Jerry Bock, the show was based on the 1940 film The shop around the corner directed by Ernst Lubitsch. Harnick discusses the rivival; his longstanding partnership with Bock; his short lived career as a band musician; penning his first Broadway hit The Boston beguine, performed by Alice Ghostley in Leonard Sillman's New faces of 1952; his beginnings as a songwriter with a classmate in high school; writing songs for productions while in the Army, and then afterwards as a student at Northwestern University, and his decision to come to New York to pursue his career as a songwriter. Harnick discusses his writing of Fiddler on the roof, addressing specifically how he and his collaborators Bock and librettist Joseph Stein adapted the tales of Sholem Aleichem for the musical stage. Lastly, Harnick comments on the current state of lyric writing in the theater.
