- Summary
- This documentary celebrates the career and influence of Martha Myers. Through narration, interviews and archival footage, the film explores Myers' introduction to dance; her political views and engagement; her marriage to Jerry Myers; her efforts to increase awareness and accessibility of dance through the film Motives for movement and the syndicated television program A time for dance. An excerpt from an episode of A time to dance featuring an interview with Antony Tudor and dance demonstrated by Norah Kaye and Hugh Laing is included. Myers' teaching career at Smith College and Connecticut College and her involvement with the American Dance Festival, her choreography and her collaborations with filmmakers are discussed. The film Chairs, which she choreographed, is shown in its entirety. Interviewees speak about the impact of Myers' interest in anatomy, body work and dance medicine on the field of dance. Myers' former students discuss the influence of her teaching methods, choreolabs, improvisation sessions, and personal inspiration on their careers and lives. Interspersed throughout is footage of Myers receiving an award at the Laban-Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies in 2003.
