- Biography (note)
- June Watanabe was born in 1939 to a Japanese American family in Los Angeles, California. She was three years old when her family was sent to an internment camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming. She began dance studies at the age of nine and continued through her teenage years and college at UCLA. During this time she also studied with Martha Graham in New York, and danced in the films The King and I and Teahouse of the August Moon. Following college she taught dance, married, and began a family. June joined Mills College dance faculty in 1975, where she served almost continuously until her retirement in 2006, much of that time juggling the duties of raising three children, teaching at Mills College, and operating her own dance company. From 1979, June's professional focus has been on choreography, realized by her own company, June Watanabe Dance Company, and since 1985, June Watanabe in Company. She has drawn inspiration from her Japanese heritage, her internment experience, and other life events to create over 50 major choreographic works.
