- Part 1, Shakespeare: Theatre director Richard Eyre traces the evolution of Shakespearean drama, from the days of the Rose to the outstanding performances of the last hundred years. Interviews with Ian McKellen, Arthur Miller, Stephen Sondheim, George Wolfe, Peter Brook, Frith Banbury, Margaret Harris, Tom Stoppard, Judi Dench, Trevor Nunn, Peter Hall, and John Gielgud, plus excerpts from avant-garde as well as traditional productions illuminate Shakespeare and his interpreters. The contributions of Harley Granville-Barker, Lilian Bayliss, the New York Shakespeare Festival, and the influence of Sigmund Freud are considered as well.
- Part 2, Ireland: Theater director Richard Eyre describes the battle for an "authentic" Irish theater--a theater of the working class, with realistic language and gritty social and political content. The influences of Oscar Wilde, William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, John Millington Synge, and Sean O'Casey are analyzed in detail. Lady Augusta Gregory and the formation of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin are discussed. Harold Brighouse and D. H. Lawrence are also profiled, as are the Manchester school and the regional repertory movement. Includes interviews with Stephen Rea, Liam Neeson, Fiona Shaw, Alan Bennett, Tom Stoppard, Edna O'Brien, Sean O'Casey, David Hare, and Peter Gill. Excerpts from The importance of being earnest, The playboy of the western world, The plow and the stars, Juno and the paycock, Mrs. Warren's profession, and other plays are featured.
