Summary

In this six-part series, Sir Richard Eyre, former director of the Royal National Theatre, explores the history of 20th century drama and its confluence with the theater of Ireland, America, and Germany. Archival footage of many of the century's most memorable productions is combined with excerpts from interviews with the writers, actors, and directors who made them possible.

Part 3, America: Richard Eyre maps out the flowering of American theater during the first half of the 20th century through archival footage and interviews with notable theater personalities including Arthur Miller, Jason Robards, Arthur Laurents, Luise Rainer, Harold Prince, George Wolfe, Stephen Sondheim, Tony Kushner, Kim Hunter, Sidney Poitier, and Philip Rose. Specifically focuses on the creation and influence of the Provincetown Playhouse group, the work of Eugene O'Neill, Clifford Odets, and Tennessee Williams. The program also explores how Yiddish theater and Jewish entertainers set the stage for the rise of the American musical, with such groundbreaking works like Show Boat and Oklahoma! The rise of Black experience in the theater, beginning with the play A raisin in the sun starring Sidney Poitier, is also examined. Includes excerpts from The iceman cometh, A long day's journey into night, Waiting for Lefty, Death of a salesman, The crucible, and A streetcar named Desire.
Part 4, 1956: This program, hosted by Richard Eyre, focuses on theater in London from the 1920s to the '60s, as self-expression struggled against rigid governmental censorship and the pressures of social conformity. The contributions of a new generation of playwrights such as John Osborne, Noel Coward, Terence Rattigan, Rodney Ackland and Brendan Behan show how British theater in the decades before and after World War II evolved through a series of surprises, shocks, and scandals. The contributions of producers "Binky" Beaumont, George Devine and Joan Littlewood are also spotlighted. Includes clips from such works as The vortex, Private lives, Design for living, The pink room, and Look back in anger. Interviews with notable playwrights and performers such as Alan Bates, John Johnston, Arthur Miller, Peter Hall, Peter Shaffer, Peter Gill, Victor Spinetti, Howard Goorney, Bill Gaskill, Arnold Wesker, Jocelyn Herbert, Frith Banbury, Harold Pinter, Vanessa Redgrave, and John Gielgud are featured.
