- Summary
- James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with film, television, and stage actor Alec Baldwin. Baldwin discusses his childhood theatergoing experiences; his decision to become an actor, his drama studies at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, and with drama teacher Elaine Aiken. Baldwin elaborates on his film career, including his part in the motion picture version of Glengarry Glen Ross, on which he worked with actor Jack Lemmon; his role Mick Dugan in Working girl, directed by Mike Nichols; his work in Talk radio, directed by Oliver Stone; his role as 'Cucumber' Frank de Marco in Jonathan Demme's Married to the mob; and his role as Jack Ryan in The hunt for red October. The discussion is illustrated with clips from some of Baldwin's films. Baldwin discusses his use of improvisation as an actor; his reasons for accepting supporting roles in films; working in the theater, despite his success as a motion picture star; how he assumes a role; choosing the characters he will portray; the importance for young actors to keep working, especially in the theater; and what he views as the value of acting to society. A brief question and answer session with Baldwin and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
