Description
1 videocassette (VHS) (53 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with film and stage actor Kevin Spacey. Spacey speaks about performing in high school productions in Chatsworth, California; his studies at The Juilliard School in New York, N.Y.; and getting cast in the 1986 Broadway revival of Eugene O'Neill's Long day's journey into night, in which he worked with veteran performer Jack Lemmon. Spacey, who has a background in stand-up comedy, does several impressions of famous stars. He discusses landing a role in Mike Nichols' film Heartburn; returning to the theater for the 1991 Broadway production of Lost in Yonkers by Neil Simon; his role as Roger "Verbal" Kint in the motion picture version of Glengarry Glen Ross; his experience directing the motion picture Albino alligator; his role as Det. Sgt. Jack Vincennes in the motion picture L. A. confidential; his return to the Broadway stage in the role of Hickey in the 1999 revival of O'Neill's The iceman cometh; and his role as Lester Burnham in the motion picture American beauty. The discussion is illustrated with clips from American beauty, L.A. confidential, Hurlyburly, and The iceman cometh. Spacey examnies his reliance on instinct and spontaneity as an actor; his incorporation of himself into the characters he plays; how he chooses a project; and acting for the stage versus film. A brief question and answer session with Spacey and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
