Summary
This program explores the creation of a film adaptation of Jerome Robbins' ballet New York export: opus jazz, to be filmed at various locations around New York City, featuring current New York City Ballet dancers. Panel discussions are moderated by Robbins biographer Amanda Vaill. Former dancers with Ballets: USA, Barbara Milberg and Edward Verso, discuss the creation of the ballet in 1958 at the Spoleto Festival and audience reactions to it. Ballet master Jean-Pierre Frohlich and re-stager Edward Verso speak about the revival of the ballet in 2005 at New York City Ballet. The creators and producers of the new film, Sean Suozzi and Ellen Bar, speak about the inspiration for the film and their desire to make the ballet accessible to their own generation. The filmmaking team (Henry Joost, Jody Lee Lipes and Ariel Schulman) speak about the technical challenges of filming out-of-doors; the cinematic decisions they made about how to capture the dance; the High Line location used for the one completed movement, Passage for two; the artistic collaboration between the worlds of dance and filmmaking; and plans for completing the remainder of the film. The panel discussion is interspersed with film clips of the work-in-progress and a live performance of one movement of the ballet, Statics.
