- The Central Administration of the New York Public Library is responsible for the management of the Research Libraries and the circulating Branch Libraries. Its primary functions are personnel, budgeting, accounting, fund raising, exhibits, and maintenance. The chief executive officer was the Director but later as the President assumed more responsibilities, the Director became the chief operating officer. The Director is assisted in the administration of the Library by an assistant director, committees, and the staff of various offices.
