Note
  • The Art and Language group, an avant-garde, Marxist association of artists, was established in Britain, in 1967-68, by Terry Atkinson, David Bainbridge, Michael Baldwin, and Harold Hurrell, who were art teachers in Coventry. The group soon attracted many Marxist conceptual artists, growing increasingly international in its membership over the years. Its journal was titled Art-Language (first issue May 1969). The New York group's journal was titled The Fox, and appeared in only three issues, ceasing publication with the break-up of the New York group (see John Walker, "Art-Language & Red Crayola," in Cross-Overs: Art into Pop, Pop into Art, London/New York: Comedia/Methuen, 1987).
