Description
1 videocassette (VHS) (54 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
James Lipton hosts an evening of discussion with comedian, actor, film producer and director Ben Stiller. Stiller discusses his upbringing in Manhattan in a Jewish/Irish Catholic show business family, and his parents Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, who performed together as the comedy team Stiller and Meara; his early involvement with filmmaking; his education, and decision at age 17 to become an actor; his drama studies at the Actors' Studio; his early stage role in the 1986 Lincoln Center Theatre production of The house of blue leaves; and his sketch comedy television program The Ben Stiller show. Stiller examines his roles in such motion pictures as Empire of the sun (1987), Reality bites (1994), The cable guy (1996), Flirting with disaster (1996), There's something about Mary (1998), Permanent midnight (1998), Meet the parents (2000), The royal Tennenbaums (2001), and Zoolander (2001), which he wrote and directed. Stiller also elaborates on his approach to his roles; the "art" of comedy; and the "risk" involved with being a comedian. A brief question and answer session with Stiller and the Actors Studio master's degree students concludes the program.
