- Summary
- This program focuses on the long career of dancer Frederic Franklin. Live performances of ballet excerpts re-staged by Franklin and film clips from the documentary Ballets Russes are interspersed with panel discussions featuring Franklin, his biographer Leslie Norton, and Georgina Parkinson and Julie Kent of American Ballet Theatre. The panelists discuss the making of Norton's biography (published 2007); Franklin's early experiences dancing with Josephine Baker in Paris, in musicals and with the Markova-Dolin Ballet in London; his years with the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo and professional relationships with Léonide Massine and Alexandra Danilova; his work as a performer and re-stager at American Ballet Theatre; his reaction to receiving the designation of CBE (Commander of the British Empire); his legendary memory for choreography; and his feelings about performing in Balanchine's works. Franklin coaches dancers onstage in the Friends dance from Coppelia, and a video segment of Franklin coaching Julie Kent and Nikolaj Hübbe in Mozartiana is shown. Georgina Parkinson offers a tribute to Franklin's character and the pleasure of working with him.
