- Note
- BMC v, p. 378.IA.22438.
- Gothic type (Proctor 5669); 35 lines.
- Signatures: a-n(8), o(10).
- Illustrations: 3 full-page woodcuts. the first represents Saint John Baptist and Saint Peter upholding a scroll inclosing the holy name; the second shows the tall, austere figure, presumably of San Lorenzo, preceded by a little crucifer, advancing toward a church door; and the third, in the style of the first, Saint John and Saint Francis upholding the name Maria.
- The second cut was adapted from the picture painted in 1466 by Gentile Bellini for the church of S. Maria del Orto, and preserved in the Museum of the Academy at Venice. Dr. Lippmann states: "This is one of the few instances in which we are enabled to trace the relation between a woodcut of the period under consideration and an undoubtedly contemporaneous painting,"--p. 106. Essling, part 1, tome 1, p. 285, refers to a privilege in the State Archives of Venice, dated 15 February 1493 (1494 new style), granting to Bernardus Benalius the right to print the works of Lorenzo Giustiniani, and states that he believes this refers to the "Doctrina della vita monastica," and that Benalius printed this book.
- Some copies, like Hain 9477, Essling 757, and Dyson Perrins 85, have a title added above the first woodcut: Doctrina del Beato Laurezo patriarcha della vita monastica, the absence of which in the above copy would indicate it to be an earlier impression.
- Binding, by the French Binders, 1920, of brown levant morocco. Sides tooled in blind, within two fillets, and an arabesque border of interlaced bands forming irregular shaped compartments filled with dots. Three fillets surround the center oblong panel composed of eight squares each embossed with the same ornament. Back lettered and embossed.
