Summary
This program focuses on the art of lighting design and the career of Jennifer Tipton. In the first segment, Tipton gives a lecture-demonstration with Dana Reitz as a model; Tipton shows the technique of focusing; the various types of lighting that can be used and their visual effects; and a set of lighting cues presented in various rhythms. Reitz performs dance improvisations, including one derived from Circumstantial evidence, a piece created by Tipton and Reitz in 1988. In the first panel discussion, Tipton and Reitz discuss their collaboration and how they established mutual trust; the interaction between light and movement; and the idea of light rather than music providing the "score" for dance. Jackson Gay and Alexandra Maslik join the discussion about their collaboration with Tipton on a scene from The glass menagerie, and Tipton speaks about the difference between working with a choreographer and working with a theater director. The scene is performed with lighting cues but without scenery, and then with scenery. Between the two performances, Tipton, Gay and Maslik discuss the collaborative nature of theater.
