- Summary
- Peter Gelb moderates a program about a new production of Philip Glass's opera Satyagraha at the Metropolitan Opera. Gelb speaks with Glass about the place of the opera in his career; how he was inspired to choose Gandhi as a subject; the events in Gandhi's life that appear in the opera, and Gandhi's influence on activism; and the libretto, which consists of Sanskrit excerpts from the Bhagavad-Gita. Peter Gelb discusses why he wanted to bring Satyagraha to the Met. Following a musical excerpt from the opera, the panel is joined by the production team of Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch of the Improbable Theatre Company, who show slides of their designs for the production and discuss their theatrical style; their use of improvisation and their attempt to incorporate Gandhi's ideas in the staging of the opera; their use of puppetry and "everyday" materials like corrugated iron, newspaper and tape in the decor. Glass speaks about how operas are created by different interpretations. Following a second musical excerpt, McDermott and Crouch show photographs from the London production of Satyagraha and discuss the costumes for the production and the use of on-stage projections of the libretto instead of Met titles.
