Details
- Description
- 1 pochoir print on board: gouache, metallic paint, col.; 75 x 51 cm.
- Subject
- Genre/Form
- Costume design drawings.
- Pochoir prints.
- Note
- Costume design for St. John the Divine for an unrealized ballet, Liturgie. Brown skinned, fine featured male figure raises his left knee and arm, leaning sidewards, giving the appearance of dancing. He wears a green, grey, and gold robe; a golden halo around his head. Trees with palm-like leaves frame the design on both sides.
- The design has the flat, two-dimensional appearance of Eastern European religious iconography; the man's cloak contains angular lines and elements of cubism.
- Signed, upper left: N. Goncharova, and lower right: N. Goncharova, Lausanne, 1915.
- Source (note)
- Alexandra Danilova;
- Biography (note)
- The ballet Liturgie was conceived by Serge Diaghilev, Leonide Massine, and Natalia Goncharova while in Lausanne, Switzerland during 1915. The production, a ballet depicting Christ's Passion, was eventually abandoned.
- Publications (note)
