Details

Description
1 pochoir print : gouache, col.; 70 x 55 cm.
Alternative Title
Apostle Mark
Subject
  • Ballets russes
  • Liturgie (Choreographic work : Massine)
Genre/Form
  • Costume design drawings.
  • Pochoir prints.
Note
  • Costume design for the Apostle Mark, for an unrealized ballet, Liturgie. Design depicts male figure, full-length, slight profile right, leaning forward at the waist. He wears a red and gold cloak; his beard and hair are dark, and a halo surrounds the crown of his head.
  • The design has the flat, two-dimensional appearance of Eastern European religious iconography; the man's body contains angular lines and elements of cubism.
Biography (note)
  • The ballet Liturgie was conceived by Serge Diaghilev, Leonide Massine, and Natalia Goncharova while in Lausanne, Switzerland during 1915. The production, a ballet depicting Christ's Passion, was eventually abandoned.
Publications (note)
  • Similar pochoir reproduced, with 15 other designs for Liturgie, in Die Maler und das Theater im 20. Jahrhundert, p. 223.
