Details
- Description
- 1 pochoir print : gouache, col.; 70 x 55 cm.
- Alternative Title
- Apostle Mark
- Subject
- Genre/Form
- Costume design drawings.
- Pochoir prints.
- Note
- Costume design for the Apostle Mark, for an unrealized ballet, Liturgie. Design depicts male figure, full-length, slight profile right, leaning forward at the waist. He wears a red and gold cloak; his beard and hair are dark, and a halo surrounds the crown of his head.
- The design has the flat, two-dimensional appearance of Eastern European religious iconography; the man's body contains angular lines and elements of cubism.
- Biography (note)
- The ballet Liturgie was conceived by Serge Diaghilev, Leonide Massine, and Natalia Goncharova while in Lausanne, Switzerland during 1915. The production, a ballet depicting Christ's Passion, was eventually abandoned.
- Publications (note)
- Similar pochoir reproduced, with 15 other designs for Liturgie, in Die Maler und das Theater im 20. Jahrhundert, p. 223.
