- Summary
- Herva Nelli, a prominent American soprano of Italian origin, successfully auditioned for Toscanini following the recommendation of Licia Albanese with whom she shared a vocal teacher, and sang the part of Desdemona in the NBC Symphony Orchestra's concert presentation of Verdi's Otello. She recalls this audition at the conductor's home and his blunt reaction: "good voice, but they taught her wrong." This concert led to the famous series of broadcasts of other Verdi works with maestro and a stage appearance at La Scala. At the end of the last conducting appearance, Toscanini gave Nelli, his protégée, his bâton that became her most important treasure.
